Windows is not the only OS. Linux is currently coming on strong. Some still use Windows 3.1 and DOS. And yet other alternatives are available. Further, there is no reason why you can't run two different operating systems on the same computer by multi-booting.

FREE DOS..........The goal of the FreeDOS Project is to create a free implementation of MS-DOS. DOS is a popular system, and there is plenty of hardware out there that supports DOS. The FreeDOS Project was founded in 1994 by Jim Hall. FreeDOS is not a derivation of MS-DOS - we are not using or referring to any Microsoft code. We are instead using the description of the MS-DOS program as given in publications (such as the user manual) to create a program of our own that follows that spec.....(free).....GO THERE!

FREEDOWS..........Although not finished yet, Freedows will be able to emulate or run applications from many different operating systems, such as Windows, Linux, or MacOS. This is accomplished through the use of Freedows Emulation Application Kernels, or "FEAKS". Think of "FEAKS" as a web browser plug-in, but instead of plugging-in support for different image file formats, you will be able to plug-in support for different operating systems. The first version of Freedows will have support for emulating Linux and a part of Windows. DOS is another possibility. In future releases, there will be support for more of the Windows API and MacOS. One feature not found in many operating systems will be the ability to customize almost every aspect of Freedows. The widgets or controls found in applications will be customizable through the use of GUI Sets. GUI Sets define the "look and feel" of a widget. GUI Sets can be applied independently to any application or used system-wide. GUI Themes define the icons used in Freedows and which GUI Set is mapped to which application. Windows 3.1, Windows98, MacOS, BeOS, Java Metal, and Motif GUI Sets and GUI Themes are planned for the first release......(free).....GO THERE!

MINUX..........MINIX is a free UNIX clone that is available with all the source code. Due to its small size, microkernel-based design, and ample documentation, it is well suited to people who want to run a UNIX-like system on their personal computer and learn about how such systems work inside. Wine works on most popular Intel Unixes, including Linux, FreeBSD, and Solaris. Wine does not require Microsoft Windows, as it is a completely alternative implementation consisting of 100% Microsoft-free code, but it can optionally use native system DLLs if they are available.
